  • 17 Jan 1900 Mrs. Viola Shober began divorce proceedings from J. Gart Shober. They have been married since 1877 and have two children. Mrs. Shober charges her husband with deseration.
  • 18 Jan 1900 Nellie M. Bartlett asks for a divorce from Ora A. Bartlett alleging failure to provide and abandonment.
  • 18 Jan 1900 John A. McCarthy secured a decree of divorce from Lulu B. McCarthy. Attorney Chester Holder says that this is the fourth time Lulu has had her marital bonds severed.

  • 31 Jan 1900 Mrs. Romy granted a decree of divorce from Robert L. Romy and alimony in the sum of $1000 was agreed upon out of court. Mrs. Romy's maiden name, Tait was restored.

  • 01 Feb 1900 Nellie M. Barlett was granted a divorce from Ora A. Barlett and restored her maiden name, Nellie M. Dollar.
  • 02 Feb 1900 Fannie E. Locke sues for a divorce from Samuel E. Locke.
  • 03 Feb 1900 Thekla Nebur sues for divorce from John Nebur and tells an awful tale of cruelty.
  • 03 Feb 1900 Anna Seitz sues for a divorce from Samuel I. Seitz and names Mrs. Charles Brumbaugh as co-respondent.
  • 09 Feb 1900 Thekla Nebur was granted a divorce from John Nebur and custody of the children. The defendant is ordered to pay $2.50 per month for support of Millie, the oldest child until April 2, 1902; also $2.50 per month for support of Theodore until January 31, 1905, and a similar sum for the support of Mary, the youngest child until January 31, 1907.
  • 10 Feb 1900 Ora Shannon sues for a divorce from Bertha Shannon alleging abandonment. The complaint recites that two day after their marriage the defendant left her husband and went home to her parents, since which time she has refused to live with him. This is Mr. Shannon's third venture in the divorce courts.
  • 10 Feb 1900 Moses Rosenthal was granted a divorce from Ida Rosenthal and the custody of their nine year old daughter.
  • 10 Feb 1900 Cora B. Fosnite was given a divorce from Hiram B. Fosnite. The plaintiff is to resume her maiden name, Cora B. Minick.

  • 13 Mar 1900 Judge Vesey granted to Eva P. Stevens a divorce from Harry A. Stevens and restored her maiden name, Wiest.
  • 14 Mar 1900 Judge O'Rourke granted to Minnie Denny a divorce from Mark Denny, restoring her maiden name, Minnie Wilder.
  • 18 Mar 1900 The case of Briant vs. Briant was settled and dismissed.
  • 23 Mar 1900 Mary Fox sues for divorce from Albert Fox because the husband is serving a term in the state reformatory for larceny.
  • 23 Mar 1900 The case of Dr. Luella Derbyshire against Dr. Samuel Derbyshire for divorce occupied the superior court yesterday.
  • 27 Mar 1900 Hirman Ward sues to have his marriage with Mary Ward annulled. The complaint recites that the plaintiff's first wife refused to accompany him to Fort Wayne from Arkansas, where they had been living. He left her and came on alone, and a couple of years afterward he learned that she had secured a divorce from him. He had grown tired of single blessedness and wanted another trial at married life. He got it, and afterward learned that the information about the first Mrs. Ward, having secured a divorce was false, and that she still waited for him to return. Now he wants his second marriage annulled.
  • 28 Mar 1900 Judge O'Rourke granted Franklin B. Ladd a divorce from Florence E. Ladd.
  • 30 Mar 1900 Judge O'Rourke granted Charlotte Disler a divorce from William Disler and permission to resume her maiden name, Charlotte Mariatt.

  • 03 Apr 1900 Judge Vesey yesterday granted Anna Seitz a divorce from Samuel J. Seitz and custody of their two children.
  • 04 Apr 1900 Ida J. Kanna sues for divorce from Fred H. Kanna, the custody of their children and alimony.
  • 05 Apr 1900 Anna R. Russell files suit for divorce from Joseph M. Russell charging abandonment.
  • 06 Apr 1900 Rose E. Aman sues for a divorce from Frank A. Aman and a restraining order.
  • 07 Apr 1900 The Stager divorce case is on trial in circuit court.
  • 07 Apr 1900 Judge O'Rourke annulled the marriage contract of Hiram Ward and Mary Ward.
  • 07 Apr 1900 Lena Budde sues for a divorce from Frederick Budde, alleging cruel and inhuman treatment. The plaintiff asks for $1000 alimony and custody of their child.
  • 08 Apr 1900 The biggest part of the population of Jackson township was crowded into the circuit court yesterday to listen to the very sensational divorce case of Lora A. Steager vs. John Steager. The parties are prominent people in their neighborhood and their marriage it seemed was not a happy one, in fact charges of cruelty were advanced by the wife and stoutly denied by the husband. Some fifty witnesses were called and after hearing sensational stories the court granted a divorce to the plaintiff and the custody of the children, reserving the question of alimony for future adjudication.
  • 10 Apr 1900 Judge Vesey granted Luella May Derbyshire a divorce from Dr. Samuel Derbyshire. The court also awarded the custody of the child to the wife.
  • 10 Apr 1900 Judge O'Rourke fixed the alimony in the Steager divorce case at $2500 cash, besides $100 for attorney's fees. The court also decreed that the husband should pay for the support and education of the children, $18 per month for the ensuing year, and an increased amount each year for ten years, the maximum allowance to be $24 per month.
  • 14 Apr 1900 Matilda C. Warren sues for a decree of divorce from Perry S. Warren.
  • 17 Apr 1900 Hiram Ward sues Mary Ward for divorce.
  • 18 Apr 1900 Mabel Stanton Smith sues for a divorce from Forest M. Smith, making the usual charges.
  • 20 Apr 1900 Mrs. Catherine Larimore sues her husband, Levi Larimore for support. The husband is an engineer on the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railway company, and the company is made in the suit. The marital troubles of the Larimore's have been aired in the courts before.
  • 22 Apr 1900 Judge Vesey granted Mary Fox a divorce from Albert Fox and custody of the minor children.
  • 22 Apr 1900 Laura Robinson sues for a divorce from David Robinson on the ground of cruelty. She also asks for all money and custody of their child.
  • 25 Apr 1900 In the superior court, Judge L. M. Ninde heard evidence in the divorce case of Esther L. Hudspeth vs. Guy P. Hudspeth and awarded the decree to the wife.

  • 02 May 1900 John Bice yesterday filed application for divorce from Birdie Bice.
  • 02 May 1900 Mary J. Hensel was granted a decree of divorce from William F. Hensel and $15 a month for support of the three children until they are sixteen years old.
  • 02 May 1900 In the case of Laure Robinson vs. David Robinson for divorce, the evidence is all in, but no decision was rendered.
  • 02 May 1900 Mrs. Golda A. Ellenwood was granted a decree of divorce from William M. Ellenwood, permitted to resume her maiden name, Golda Wagner and allowed $1200 alimony payable in sums of $150 a year.
  • 03 May 1900 Lean Budde secured a decree of divorce from Frederick Budde and the custody of their child, Lena.
  • 03 May 1900 Laura Robinson was granted a decree from David Robinson, the custody of their two children and $12.50 a month for their support until they reach and age of twenty-one years.
  • 09 May 1900 Harriett Miller files action for a decree of divorce from Ruches C. Miller.
  • 12 May 1900 Judge O'Rourke granted Jennie Johnson a divorce from Byron Johnson and the wife was given custody of six children.
  • 12 May 1900 Judge Vesey granted to Harriett Miller a decree of divorce from Ruches C. Miller.
  • 16 May 1900 Henry Wells sues for a divorce from Sarah Wells.
  • 16 May 1900 Birdie Bice was granted a divorce from John Bice.
  • 18 May 1900 Sarah A. Edsall was granted a divorce from Samuel G. Edsall and given permission to resume her maiden name, Sarah A. Dustman.
  • 19 May 1900 Ida Atley sues for a divorce from Jacob E. Atley.
  • 23 May 1900 Mrs. Clara Copinus was granted a divorce yesterday from her husband, Albert Copinus. The wife alleged abandonment, and Judge Vesey granted her a decree and permission to resume her maiden name, Clara Heibroner.
  • 24 May 1900 Amelia J. Schnelker sues Herman J. Schnelker for divorce making the usual allegations.
  • 27 May 1900 The evidence is all in on the case of Fuhrman vs. Fuhrman for divorce and a verdict will be returned next week.
  • 29 May 1900 Olega Platter sues Ira Platter for divorce.

  • 01 Jun 1900 Olive B. Butts sues for a decree of divorce from William H. Butts. The husband is charged with failure to provide and habitual drunkenness.
  • 01 Jun 1900 Tillie Rhinehart asks Judge Vesey to grant her a divorce from Joseph Rhinehart. Plaintiff alleges that they were married in July 1888, and separated in October 1897, at which time the defendant abandoned the plaintiff. They have no children.
  • 05 Jun 1900 Marinda Wickliff sues for a divorce from Benjamin Wickliff.
  • 08 Jun 1900 Adelaide Klein sues for a divorce from her husband Richard Klein. The complaint alleges cruel treatment and failure to support.
  • 10 Jun 1900 Judge O'Rourke granted Rush L. Wolford a legal separation from his wife Catherine, and she was allowed to resume her maiden name, Catherine McGovern. The wife was given $225 alimony.
  • 10 Jun 1900 Stella M. Ward asks for a divorce from Albert D. Ward, alleging cruel and in human treatment. She also asks that the Pennsylvania company be restrained from paying the defendant his wages.
  • 10 Jun 1900 Judge Vesey granted Anna M. Russell a divorce from her husband, Joseph M. Russell and she was allowed to resume her maiden name, Anna M. Chapman.
  • 10 Jun 1900 Lillian Rhinehart was granted a divorce from her husband, Joseph Rhinehart by Judge Vesey. The plaintiff was allowed to resume her maiden name, Lillian Crawford.
  • 10 Jun 1900 The divorce case brought by Adelaide Klein against Richard Klein was dismissed.
  • 13 Jun 1900 The divorce case of Ransom vs. Ransom was dismissed in the superior court.
  • 15 Jun 1900 Hatie Helvie sues Oliver Helvie for support, asking $200.

  • 21 Jun 1900 Charles Romy, the police officer, has applied for a divorce from his wife Bertha, who resides in Chicago and insists on him supporting her there.
  • 21 Jun 1900 Adella Ann Norton was granted a divorce from William D. Norton.
  • 21 Jun 1900 The case of Stella M. Ward vs. Albert D. Ward was dismissed at plaintiffs cost.
  • 22 Jun 1900 Flora Franer files a suit for divorce from Philip Franer, making sensational charges against her husband, who is restrained from molesting the plaintiff. The wife charges that he knocked her down, pulled her about by the feet, spent the money she earned and wished he and bade dead.
  • 28 Jun 1900 Judge Vesey granted to Mabel Stanton Smith a divorce from Forest M. Smith and the restoration of her maiden name, Mabel Stanton and the custody of their minor child.
  • 30 Jun 1900 Emma E. Straub was granted a divorce from Charles S. Straub and custody of the three children. The defendant is required to provide for their support until they reach the age of fifteen years.

  • 04 Jul 1900 Judge Vesey, in the case of Chas Vernon against Eliza Vernon, granted a divorce to the defendant, giving her alimony in the sum of $2250, a lot in Goshen and the custody of their nine children.
  • 10 Jul 1900 Judge Vesey granted a decree of divorce to Laura A. Harmon from John C. Harmon.
  • 10 Jul 1900 Geo. Bobay sues for a decree of divorce from Minnie Bobay on the grounds that she has been cruel, has called him vile names, stayed away from home and went out with men.
  • 14 Jul 1900 Sophia Hays began proceedings for a divorce from Joseph Hays charging cruelty. She asks for the custody of their children and a just amount of alimony.
  • 14 Jul 1900 Louise Smethers asks for a divorce from James K. Smethers.
  • 17 Jul 1900 Elizabeth Hollbaugh sues Adelbert G. Hollbaugh for a divorce and the custody of the child.
  • 17 Jul 1900 The case of Olega Platter vs. Ira Platter was disimissed.
  • 18 Jul 1900 Judge Vesey granted Flora B. France a decree of divorce from Philip France, and the custody of their four minor children. The husband is required to pay $700 alimony and $5 a month for the support of each minor child until the girls are eighteen years of age and the boys are sixteen years of age.
  • 20 Jul 1900 Conrad Kammier has applied for a divorce from Myrtle Kammier.
  • 21 Jul 1900 Rosanna Farra brought suit against Francis Farra for divorce, and Judge Vesey granted the plaintiff's petition for a restraining order, prohibiting the defendant from disposing of certain property.
  • 22 Jul 1900 Emma Koerper was granted a divorce from John Koerper.
  • 24 Jul 1900 Clara V. Baker was granted a divorce from George Baker and the custody of their minor child.
  • 25 Jul 1900 The divorce application of Rosana Farra and Francis Farra was dismissed.
  • 25 Jul 1900 Hattie M. Driver applied for a divorce from Wm. M. Diver, and pending a hearing Judge Vesey enjoined the husband from disposing of his real or personal property, from interfering with the plaintiff or withholding her wearing apparel. The husband has the children until the case is heard. Mrs. Driver asks for $2000 alimony.
  • 25 Jul 1900 Louise Smethers was granted a divorce from James K. Smethers and $50 alimony.
  • 26 Jul 1900 Samuel Burke sues for a divorce from Mary Ann Burke. He is eighty-four and the defendant is sixty-four. He alleges that she has a way of beating him over the head with a poker when they differed, to bring him to her way of thinking. They live in the northern part of the county.
  • 28 Jul 1900 Anna Birchman sues for a divorce from John Birchman. She alleges cruel treatment on the part of the husband, and also charges that he treatened to do her bodily injury. Judge Vesey issued an order enjoing the defendant from molesting the plaintiff pending the trial of the case.
  • 29 Jul 1900 Frederick P. Blaising files suit for divorce from Grace B. Blaising making the usual charges.
  • 29 Jul 1900 Mary Bates sues for a divorce from Theodore Bates. She charges brutal conduct on the part of her husband in his treatment of her. She fears bodily injury at his hands and asks for a restraining order enjoining him from visiting and molesting her. She also asks for alimony and that the defendant be enjoined from disposing of his property pending the trail of the case.
  • 31 Jul 1900 Emma Allen asks for a decree of divorce from Richard Allen, charging the husband with slapping her and failure to provide for her wants.
  • 31 Jul 1900 Sophia Heuer yesterday began proceedings for divorce from Martin H. Heuer, alleging neglect and failure to provide. She asks for the custody of their child and $2000 alimony.

  • 01 Aug 1900 Bertie R. Snyder sues for a divorce and $3000 alimony from Charles S. Snyder.
  • 01 Aug 1900 Edna R. Shaure sues for a divorce from John W. Shaure.
  • 01 Aug 1900 Judge Vesey granted to Hattie Helvie in her suit for support, $15 a month from June 1, requiring the husband, Oliver Halvie to pay $30 down.
  • 01 Aug 1900 Elizabeth Hollbaugh was granted by Judge Vesey a divorce from Adelbert G. Hollbaugh and the custody of their minor child.
  • 03 Aug 1900 Judge Vesey granted a divorce to Myrtle Morton from Sydney Morton and allowed her to resume her maiden name, Myrtle Chamberlain.
  • 04 Aug 1900 Katie E. Wilson sues for a divorce from David E. Wilson.
  • 07 Aug 1900 Matilda Hutchinson sues for a decree of divorce from Isaac Newton Hutchinson, and such alimony as the court decrees is just. The wife complains that the husband has been cruel to her, applying vile names to her, threating, questioning her virtue and keeping her apart from her relatives at a time too, when she was in an interesting condition. Mrs. Hutchinson is now with her parents.
  • 07 Aug 1900 In the action of Mrs. Catherine J. McCausland, the court decree that Dr. John W. McCausland should pay her $40 a month for support.
  • 07 Aug 1900 Mary L. Geyer was granted a decree of divorce from Wm. Geyer.

  • 15 Aug 1900 Theresa Caroline Brown asked to be released from unhappy marital bonds. She charges her husband, Joseph L. Brown with cruelty.
  • 17 Aug 1900 Eunice B. Stokes Conklin sues for divorce from Eli B. Conklin.
  • 17 Aug 1900 James Wells sues for divorce from Mary Wells.
  • 19 Aug 1900 Anna Dreibelbiss sues for a divorce from Clarence Dreibelbiss and Judge Vesey enjoyed the Fort Wayne Tractor company from paying the defendant pending a hearing. The husband is also restrained from disposing of his property or interfering with the plaintiff.
  • 19 Aug 1900 Mrs. Mary Wells has filed a cross bill in answer to the complaint of her husband for divorce, and he is restrained from visiting her, annoying her or disposing of his property. The Pennsylvania railroad is enjoined from paying the husband until the divorce case is heard.
  • 21 Aug 1900 Cyrus Farner sues for a divorce from May Farner.
  • 21 Aug 1900 Judge Vesey granted a divorce to Rosanna Farra from Francis E. Farra and alimony in the sum of $216.
  • 23 Aug 1900 The case of Anna Dreibelbiss against Clarence Dreibelbiss has been dismissed.
  • 24 Aug 1900 Anna Celia Garman files proceeding for divorce from Delbert A. Garman. The complaint is sensational and picturesque, it charges the husband with cruelty, being morose and gloomy, with making charges of un-chastity against the wife, and with looking upon the dark side of life.
  • 24 Aug 1900 George M. Scott sues for a divorce from Ida E. Scott on grounds of cruelty.
  • 28 Aug 1900 Lillie Miner files proceeding for divorce from Danny Miner. The complaint alleges that they were married January 8, 1894, and separated in September 1896, at which time the defendant abandoned her and his since failed to make any provisions for her support. Plaintiff asks that her maiden name, Lillie Lash be restored.

  • 05 Sep 1900 In the case of Melissa Brindle vs. Daniel Brindle, divorce was decreed plaintiff together with the custody of minor children and $450 alimony.
  • 11 Sep 1900 Emma Bear sues for a divorce from Alvin Bear, and Judge Vesey restrained the Nickel Plate railway from paying his wages and the husband from selling personal property.
  • 11 Sep 1900 Nellie Cohagen has filed proceeding for a decree of divorce from Wm. E. Cohagen.

She was married to Mr. Ryan, who is a prominent lawyer and one of the wealthiest residents of Muncie. There is a romance about their wedding. Mrs. Jones-Ryan and Mr. Ryan were lovers in life's green spring. They met after losing husband and wife, and the courtship was renewed resulting in marriage three years ago. For a year or more they have not lived together.

The custody of one of the children was given to the plaintiff and custody of the other to the defendant, and an allowance was granted for the support of the child given to the defendant.

The defendant is an old soldier and was employed at the Pennsylvania yards. The wife asks that he be restrained from interfering with her and that the Pennsylvania company be restrained from paying him his salary now due. She also asks for the custody of two daughters, ages 18 and 14 years.

  • 24 Oct 1900 Judge Vesey yesterday refused the application of Philip Smith for a divorce from Lizzie Smith. Judge Vesey declared that there was no evidence to show why the couple should be divorced and even though a cross-complaint has been filed, the decree would not have been granted either to the husband or wife.

  • 27 Oct 1900 Dr. James Sion Smith has filed an application for divorce from his wife, Alice M. Smith. The complaint alleges that they were married in 1870 and separated in July 1900, and to them were born two children, a son aged twelve and a daughter Maude May aged eighteen. The husband alleges that the wife has been cruel and inhuman in her treatment of him for years, but he bore with it because he believed it was his duty to provide for her support. Recently however, she became legatee of $40,000 in the will of Thomas B. Shoaff, and since that time has accused him of being drunkard and called him a fool and other hard names. She ordered him to pack his duds and leave the house. She also estranged the daughter's love and when plaintiff chastised the daughter for some indiscretion, the young woman was rebellious and disobedient. One night it is alleged, the mother surreptitiously assisted the daughter to leave the house and for ten day the father worried about her, the defendant refusing to disclose the daughter's whereabouts. Finally she was located in another state and is still there. Mr. Smith was once a water works trustee of the city.
