- Deam, Charles Clemon, 1865-1953, the first Indiana state forester from nearby Bluffton, Wells County, Indiana, preeminent botanist and visionary conservationist, a biography Plain Ol' Charlie Deam: Pioneer Hoosier Botanist by Robert C. Kriebel, interesting for many reasons, particularly when he remembered how his family traveled by wagon train from southern Ohio to his future home in Bluffton, Indiana. Deam wrote Trees of Indiana (1921) or the 1921 1st Edition Trees of Indiana considered the "bible" of trees by botanists for trees native to Indiana and nearby states prior to settlement by European pioneers. The book has a 1915 photo showing the largest broadleaf tree in the United States - a sycamore growing near Kokomo, since 1916 the 57 foot circumference stump has been at the Kokomo Highland Park. In 1940 Deam wrote Flora of Indiana, another book prized by botanists interested in native plants. Deam is honored with the Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area in the Hoosier National Forest.
