Allen County, Indiana Links

In spite of all the wonderful information found online, the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center has been acquiring an average of 1,000 new volumes each month for over a decade. It is unlikely even a small percentage of their collection will be online any time soon. ACPL open racks currently house over 350,000 printed volumes, 513,000 rolls of microfilm or microfiche and has access to over 2.4 million rolls of microfilm for the cost of a small mailing fee from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. So a personal visit to ACPL or other libraries relevant to your family search will lead to discoveries not found online. Internet Archive reports over 7,500 volumes scanned on their site at the Allen County Public Library. Internet Archive also reports over 7,500 volumes with Allen County, Indiana in a keyword search. Either one is less than one year of new acquisitions at Allen County Public Library.

Legal Tidbits

When engagements to marriage are cancelled, it is often assumed the women gets to keep the ring if her fiance cancels the wedding. However, in some states the law defines the ring as a "gift conditional upon marriage" so consult a lawyer before assuming anyone gets to keep anything to avoid additional emotional and financial setbacks.

• Deam, Charles Clemon, 1865-1953 the first Indiana state forester from nearby Bluffton, Wells County, Indiana, preeminent botanist and visionary conservationist, a biography Plain Ol' Charlie Deam: Pioneer Hoosier Botanist  by Robert C. Kriebel, interesting for many reasons, particularly when he remembered how his family traveled by wagon train from southern Ohio to his future home in Bluffton, Indiana. Deam wrote Trees of Indiana (1921) or the 1921 1st Edition Trees of Indiana considered the "bible" of trees by botanists for trees native to Indiana and nearby states prior to settlement by European pioneers. The book has a 1915 photo showing the largest broadleaf tree in the United States - a sycamore growing near Kokomo, since 1916 the 57 foot circumference stump has been at the Kokomo Highland Park. In 1940 Deam wrote Flora of Indiana, another book prized by botanists interested in native plants. Deam is honored with the Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area in the Hoosier National Forest.
