    Insane Persons. The following persons have been reported as insane by Wm. Fleming, County Clerk, for 1869, and properly cared for. The cause of insanity, we have been unable to obtain: Walter Laidlaw, Mary Goodman, Catharine Buhr, Julia Morris, Charles Chanvay, Robert Mooney, Wm. S. Schroeder, Caroline French, Francis A. McElfatrick.

    Sheriff McCartney starts tonight with Francis Emerick, an insane man, for the State Asylum. Emerick is from Springfield, this county.

    In our list of insane persons sent to the asylum last year from this county published a few days ago, the name of Mr. Walter Laidlaw was given in connection with it. We should have said that Mr. Laidlaw has entirely recovered and was at home attending to business as usual.

    Sol D. Bayless, guardian of Frances A. L. McElfatric, an insane person, will offer for sale at a private sale on August 11, 1870, real estate in Allen County.

    Yesterday Justices Bittinger and Graham, aided by Dr. A. J. Erwin, held an investigation concerning the alleged insanity of a woman named Rosanna Baumer and pronounced her insane recommending that she be sent to the hospital for the insane for medical treatment.

  • Fort Wayne Sentinel, 27 Mar 1871.
    Justices Graham and Bittinger this morning held an inquest on Mrs. Harriet Wright and adjudged her insane and application will be made for her admission into the Insane Hospital at Indianapolis. The unfortunate woman is the wife of Mr. Daniel Wright, an old respected citizen and her mental derangement was caused from illness superinduced by childbirth.

    Justices Graham and Ryan yesterday pronounced Valentine Hesset insane and a fit subject for the insane asylum.

    Allan Mooney has been returned from the Indianapolis Insane Asylum pronounced incurable. Peter Eickler takes his place.

  • Fort Wayne Daily Gazette, 4 Jul 1871.
    There are sixteen persons locked up in the county jail. Of these, three are incurably insane. They are men who have been brought back from Indianapolis to pass their lives in such quarters as the county may provide. The oldest inhabitant of the jail is Arnold Stills who has lived there three years, hopelessly insane. Edward Kellet has been there two months in the same condition and Robert Mooney just returned from the asylum.

  • Fort Wayne Sentinel, 3 Aug 1871.
    Gilty, the fighting maniac, has been pronounced insane. He was going to thrash the Jury this morning and did hit one of them in the mouth. The man is dangerous and will have to be kept in close quarters until he can be sent to Indianapolis.

  • Fort Wayne Sentinel, 23 Aug 1871.
    This morning Felix Davey killed his wife and made an ineffectual attempt to kill his own children. He then cut his own throat. Davey was said to be insane.

  • Fort Wayne Daily Gazette, 28 Sep 1871.
    James Dunn was yesterday before Squire Ryan undergoing an examination on charge of lunacy. His case will be decided today. There seems to be but little doubt that the man is insane and if so adjudged, he will probably go to the asylum at Indianapolis.

  • Fort Wayne Daily Gazette, 26 Oct 1871.
    A jury was impaneled in the matter of the State vs Gilty, an insane person. They rendered a verdict the effect of which was that Gilty was insane and an unsafe person to run at large. The Court requested the necessary papers be drawn and try and effect the removal of Gilty to the Insane Asylum.

    John McQuiston, Jr. has been adjudged insane and will be sent to the asylum at Indianapolis.

    Caroline Finley was found to be insane on inquest held by Messrs. Ryan and Bittinger and she will be sent to the lunatic asylum as soon as a return is made to the application for her admission to that institution.

    Sheriff Zollinger left for Indianapolis today having in charge J. F. Fletcher whom he takes to the Insane Hospital.

    In the case of the State of Indiana exrel John Strack vs Samuel Kreve, alleged to be insane appealed from Ryan, a dismissal was ordered at the cost of relator and the defendant discharged from custody.

    Mary Ann Corcoran of this city has been taken to the State Hospital for the Insane at Indianapolis.

  • Fort Wayne Daily Gazette, 18 Jul 1873.
    Last evening, as Captain Singleton was sitting near the caboose, he was surprised by the appearance of Mr. George Holmes of the stock yards with a face streaming with blood. Mr. Holmes wanted a pair of handcuffs to put on the wrists of his insane wife whose madness was lately renewed. With the proper assistance he returned to the house and Mrs. Holmes was conveyed to the house of her father, Mr. Bullard, who lives some four miles west of the city. The case is a peculiarly sad one. Some months since Mrs. Holmes was returned from the Insane Asylum at Indianapolis after being pronounced incurable. She had been doing very well of late and some slight hopes had been entertained of her ultimate recovery but the circumstances of yesterday have cast renewed gloom upon a large circle of acquaintances.

    The semi-annual report of the Superintendent of the County Asylum, John Spice, has been filed in the Auditor’s office. The total number of inmates is 52 of whom 20 are insane.

    Dr. Sweringen left yesterday morning for the State Hospital at Indianapolis in charge of Mr. A. C. Keel who is adjudged insane.

    The application for admission into the Indianapolis Insane Asylum made on behalf of John Emerick of this city has been refused on the ground that chronic cases cannot be admitted and that the house is crowded.

    Yesterday a reporter of the Sentinel visited Indianapolis with Sheriff Hance and went through the State Hospital for the Insane. Allen County now has twelve inmates in the institution, half male, half female. Since the opening 129 persons from this county have been treated.

    Charles Tuchlgenhagen has filed a petition in the circuit court asking that Henry Tuchlgenhagen be declared insane and a guardian appointed for him.

  • Fort Wayne Sentinel, 1 Dec 1874.
    John P. And Frank C. Hance took the man, Paul R. Siebelist, who was demented and passed some days at the hospital here, to the Insane Asylum at Indianapolis last Friday. The two wards in the asylum designed for the “worst cases” are B and H. Siebelist was assigned to H, he being deemed a “bad man.” They returned with Charles F. Collins, a resident of Aboite Township, who is pronounced cured. He had been in the asylum up to the time of his release for nearly three months. His insanity was caused by a sunstroke received last summer while working in the field. So, the county sends away an insane man and gets back a sound one-an even exchange.

    Deputy Sheriff J. P. Hance, started early this morning in charge of the insane woman, Jane Ward. The Indianapolis asylum will henceforth be her “pent up Utica”.

    Deputy Sheriff Lehr took Jane Swank of Monroeville to the insane asylum yesterday and returned with Annie Fulford of this township.

    Paul R. Sieblist, an inmate of the state insane hospital from this county has been adjudged incurable. Deputy Sheriff Cooper Monday went to Indianapolis to get him. He will be lodged in the County Infirmary.

    Edward Zychowiz was taken to the state insane hospital at Indianapolis on Monday. He is a Polish Catholic priest.
    Ann Hayes was refused admittance to the state insane hospital on account of statute of limitations.

    Steve Helmer, formerly of this city, died at the insane asylum at Indianapolis last Friday.

    Mary Murray was brought home from the state insane hospital Thursday and placed in the county asylum.
    Jacob Fink ofCedarville has been pronounced cured and will return home in a day or two from the state insane hospital.
    Jacob Fink, of Leo, who was recently taken to the insane asylum, has been pronounced cured. Fink has been in the asylum several times and always appears to recover after a few weeks treatment. When he gets out however his mind soon fails him.

    Lucy Corcoran, of Bull Rapids this county, is ordered returned from the state insane hospital.
    Mrs. Lucy Corcoran of Maumee Township who was returned from the state hospital last week, pronounced incurable, is now in jail awaiting removal to Columbus, Ohio.
    Bob Sterling died Wednesday at the county asylum where he had been an inmate many years. "He was buried in the asylum cemetery on Saturday."

    Reports from the state insane hospital are to the effect that Will Bond's condition is not improved. The type of his insanity has changed however. He is no longer violent but is morose and sullen, a very bad symptom.

    The court has issued an order to have Nathaniel H. Miller of Jefferson Township taken to the insane asylum.
    Mr. Miller returned from there a short time since.
