  • 02 Jan 1878 Sarah Cole vs. Benjamin Cole (long article), divorce. [Circuit Court, Case File]
  • 09 Jan 1878 Kayser, Nancy was granted a divorce from Fred Kayser and $300 alimony. The husband takes custody of the child and pays the costs.
  • 09 Jan 1878 Ellen Wagner vs. Perry Wagner, divorce granted to plaintiff at her costs.
  • 09 Jan 1878 Samuel G. Mettert vs. Margaret E. Mettert (she was previously divorced from Mr. Gleason before marrying Mettert).
  • 16 Jan 1878 The replevin case of Nancy Kayser vs. Frederick Kayser was dismissed.
  • 23 Jan 1878 Dora Beach vs. Frederick Beach, divorced refused.
  • 23 Jan 1878 Mrs. Clara Younge last Tuesday filed for divorce from Dr. J. W. Younge. The parties were married 24th August last at Van Wert, Ohio. After testimony, Judge O'Rourke granted the divorce in favor of the plaintiff. This is one of the quickest divorce cases on record in Allen County
  • 30 Jan 1878 Emeline McEwen vs. George W. McEwen, decree of divorce and custody of the child to the plaintiff and it shall be unlawful for her to marry again in two years from decree of divorce.
  • 30 Jan 1878 Samuel G. Mettert was granted divorce from Margaret E. Mettert on grounds of adultery, abandonment, etc.

  • 06 Feb 1878 One witness testified in the divorce case of Charles C. Blakely vs. Barbara J. Blakely. The complaint sets forth that the plaintiff and defendant were married at Indianapolis February 4, 1875 and on the 7th of May 1877 and at different other times the defendant committed adultery with one Rufus C. Crotts.

  • 13 Feb 1878 Chas. C. Blakely was granted a divorce from Barbara C. Blakely on grounds of adultery with Rufus C. Crotts.

  • 06 Mar 1878 The divorce petition filed by Tamson A. Branstrater against William Branstrater sets forth that the parties were married in this city on the 2nd day of February, less than a month ago, and charges that the defendant is a habitual drunkard which fact was unknown to the plaintiff at the time of the marriage. It also charges failure to support and that the "defendant has gone to parts unknown with another woman". Defendant is said to won $1500 worth of property and alimony is therefore demanded.

  • 06 Mar 1878 Breach of Promise Suit; Louise Casting Monday began suit for breach of promise to marry against Adam Sharf, claiming $2000 damages.
  • 13 Mar 1878 Mary Waltz was granted a divorce from Henry Waltz on grounds of adultery. Plaintiff is given custody of the child. In the Waltz divorce case yesterday afternoon, one witness testified, Mr. Wass, father of the plaintiff, who swore the defendant had communicated a loathsome disease to his wife.
  • 27 Mar 1878 Mary H. Virgil filed a petition for divorce from Almon K. Virgil, formerly a music teacher in this city. The parties were married on the 4th of August 1868 and lived together until the 1st of February 1865 when as the complaint alleges the defendant abandoned her and since that time has failed to provide for her or to recognize her as his wife. In addition to the divorce the plaintiff asks the court to restore to her her maiden name, Mary H. Mendenhall.
  • 27 Mar 1878 Margaret Grubaugh applied for divorce from Jacob Grubaugh and the custody of the one child, a daughter aged eight years. The complaint alleges that the parties were married on the 31st of March 1869 and that the defendant deserted plaintiff in the month of September of the same year and has ever since that time remained away from her and failed to provide for her in any way.

  • 10 Apr 1878 Rosa Zink vs. Robert Zink, divorce dismissed.
  • 10 Apr 1878 Anne Hopple has applied fofr a divorce from John Hopple to whom she was married on the 4th of April 1867. She charges in the complaint that the defendant has for"the last six years treated the petitioner with great cruelty, that he has frequently cursed and swore at her calling her all kinds of abusive names and accusing her of having carnal knowledge of other men"; The plaintiff asks for divorce, $500 alimony and custody of the one child, a boy eight years of age.

  • 17 Apr 1878 Only one divorce was granted in the circuit court during the February term.
  • 17 Apr 1878 Mr. Bayless Holmes and Mrs. Eleanor Holmes who were divorced in circuit court a few months ago were remarried Saturday.
  • 17 Apr 1878 John T. Wass applied for divorce from Vaulney Wass. The parties were married on October 30, 1869 and have two children. The plaintiff charges that the defendant abandoned him on the 3rd of January 1878 and has since that time repeatedly refused to live with him. The plaintiff asks the custody of the child, Clarence O.

  • 8 May 1878 Hannah Critchet vs. Geo. A. Critchet, divorce granted to plaintiff at defendant's costs in superior court.
  • 15 May 1878 George McCehon vs. _____ McCehon, divorce dismissed.
  • 15 May 1878 Mary Ellen Enger vs. Nils C. Enger divorce and custody of the child granted to plaintiff.

  • 15 May 1878 Florentine Grimm applied for a divorce from John Grimm. The parties were married May 7, 1848 in Buffalo. The complaint charges the defendant with cruel and inhuman treatment, vile and abusive epithets, etc. Plaintiff says life is a burden to her and the defendant's presence is intolerable. There are three minor children whose custody the plaintiff asks for. She also demands $1000 alimony.

  • 22 May 1878 Alice Murch vs. Richard Murch, divorce on grounds of cruel treatment.
  • 22 May 1878 Jos. J. McDermot applied for a divorce from Ellen McDermot to whom he was married in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 1, 1860. The complaint charges that the defendant is a habitual drunkard, she disgraces him frequently by lying down in public places when drunk. There are no children.
  • 22 May 1878 Sarah E. Bloomhuff vs. William D. Bloomhuff for divorce. They were married in this city 11th Jul 1866 and lived together until 11 May 1878 when plaintiff left defendant. Charges include cruel and inhuman treatment and adultery. Defendant visited a house of ill fame kept by Mollie Nicholls and there associated with low and lewd women, etc. (very long article). There are two children five and 10 years old of whom she asks custody, a decree of divorce and proper alimony.

  • 29 May 1878 In the case of John T. Wass vs. Volney Wass divorce is granted to defendant and by agreement custody of the child, Clarence O. was awarded to plaintiff and of Decelda was awarded to defendant in Superior court.

  • 31 Jul 1878 Naoma Whitwright vs. Jacob K. Whitwright, to whom she was married on September 7, 1873 on grounds of cruelty, adultery with one Catharine Haley on 14th April 1877. Alimony of $500 and custody of two children are demanded.

She says her life is in danger so long as she lives with him. She also charges defendant got possession of $1200 of her money. She asks custody of one child and $1600 alimony.
