  • 06 Jan 1901 Louise M. Sweeney filed application for a decree of divorce from Alexander Sweeney and $500 alimony.
  • 06 Jan 1901 The divorce case of Dierkes vs Dierkes was dismissed.
  • 09 Jan 1901 Alma Kennedy sues for a decree of divorce and alimony from Clem D. Kennedy, and the Kerr Murray company was asked to withhold his wages.
  • 10 Jan 1901 Marie Ann Hooker applies for a divorce from Walter C. Hooker and asks for $500 alimony. She charges that the husband is an habitual drunkard, has been abusive and cruel, and she asks that her child be restored to her alleging that she was kidnapped by the husband Tuesday. The court has enjoined interference with household goods and the Nickel Plate railroad is stopped from paying him wages.

  • 29 Jan 1901 Sarah B. Tousley filed another suit for divorce from Isaas N. Tousley, asking alimony and the custody of their children. She charges cruelty. The first suit was dismissed because the parties lived together after it was filed.

  • 08 Feb 1901 Dora Snyder sues for a decree of divorce from Lewis Snyder and $300 alimony. The Nickel Plate railroad is enjoined from paying wages to Snyder. The complaint charges the husband with extreme cruelty, striking his wife and threatening to kill her.
  • 08 Feb 1901 In the case of Smethers vs Smethers for divorce, the restraining order was dismissed.
  • 09 Feb 1901 Mrs. Emma Bessert asks the court to set aside the divorce obtained by her husband, Gustave Bessert, to open up proceedings and give her a hearing, which she asserts she did not have in the matter.
  • 09 Feb 1901 Lewis Snyder may find himself in serious trouble for defying the order of Judge Aikin in the suit for divorce instituted by his wife, Dora. Snyder who is employed by the Nickel Plate railroad, excluded his wife from their home by force and compelled her to walk the streets at night. The matter was brought to the attention of Judge Aikin and he has ordered Snyder to appear before him and explain.
  • 10 Feb 1901 Judge O'Rourke granted to Alice Magnet a divorce from George Magnet, the custody of their child and $1.50 a week for its support.
  • 10 Feb 1901 Marquerite Dresch was granted a divorce from George T. Dresch, the custody of one child and $450 alimony.
  • 10 Feb 1901 Mr. Snyder, who violated the court's instructions, was given a chance to redeem himselp.
  • 12 Feb 1901 John Reider sues for divorce from Nancy J. Reider, who is charged with cruelty and neglect of duties as a wife.
  • 12 Feb 1901 Judge O'Rourke heard the evidence in the divorce case of David Linton vs Sarah Linton and refused to issue a decree to the husband.
  • 13 Feb 1901 In the divorce case of Sarah B. Tousley vs Issac M. Tousley, the General Electric Light company is enjoined from paying, and Tousley is enjoined from receiving his wages. Tousley's house was ravaged by fire Monday.
  • 14 Feb 1901 Emma Sanders sues for a divorce from Alex Sanders and $1000 alimony.
  • 16 Feb 1901 Lawrence E. Bittenger vs Ethel Bittenger, the judgement entered two years ago modified and plaintiff awarded custody of minor children on defendants petition.
  • 16 Feb 1901 Sarah B. Tousley was granted a divorce from Isaac M. Tousley, the custody of minor children and $10 per month for their support.
  • 17 Feb 1901 Nettie Repp sues Rufus Repp for a divorce.
  • 19 Feb 1901 Jennie C. Hay applies for a decree of divorce from Samuel Hay. The complaint alleges that they were married in 1887, but have not lived together for three years past, and that for two years the defendant has not provided for her although able to do so. She also asks for the custody of their two children aged 10 and 12 years.
  • 19 Feb 1901 Dora Snyder was granted a decree of divorce from Lewis Snyder, the household goods at No. 38 Ewing Street and $50 alimony. The Nickel Plate railway is ordered to pay the clerk of the court $50 in satisfaction of judgement.
  • 23 Feb 1901 Emma Sanders was granted a divorce from Alexander Sanders, was given $25 and permission to resume her maiden name, Anna Bierbaum.
  • 24 Feb 1901 Lilly Bellamy was granted a divorce from William H. Bellamy, and custody of five minor children.
  • 26 Feb 1901 In the case of Bessert vs Bessert, the plaintiff files an amended complaint.
  • 27 Feb 1901 Clarence L. Birely sues for a decree of divorce from Anna M. Birley.
  • 27 Feb 1901 Ada Flinn sues William Flinn for a divorce. The complaint alleges that the two were married in 1877 and lived together for less than a year, when the plaintiff was obliged to separate from the defendant by reason of cruel treatment to her, and that she has continued to live apart from him ever since and has since supported herself.

  • 13 Mar 1901 Alma Z. Kennedy was granted a divorce from Clem Kennedy, the custody of two children and $12 per month alimony.
  • 13 Mar 1901 Josephine Winkler sues for a divorce from Frederick Winkler, and asked for $500 alimony and a restraining order preventing the defendant from disposing of his property pending the trial of the case.

  • 20 Mar 1901 Mary C. Hockley was granted a decree of divorce from William Hockley and her maiden name restored.
  • 21 Mar 1901 Mrs. Mary Kessler applied for a divorce from Dr. Abraham J. Kessler, charging that the doctor is not a fit man to live with. The wife charges the doctor with cruelty and because of his temper she could not live with him.
  • 21 Mar 1901 Judge O'Rourke has granted a divorce to Josephine Shuey from William Frank Shuey.
  • 21 Mar 1901 Harry Yates was granted a decree of divorce from Addie Yates.
  • 21 Mar 1901 The divorce case of Cohgan vs Cohagan was dismissed.
  • 22 Mar 1901 Jennie Butts has filed application for a decree of divorce from Charles Butts. The parties were married in 1889, but have not lived together for eight years, and failure to provide and abandonment are the charges alleged.
  • 22 Mar 1901 Addie Yates was granted a decree of divorce from Harry Yates, after a nasty contest.
  • 22 Mar 1901 Ida Schultz was granted a divorce from Herman Schultz. Plaintiff was given the custody of nine minor children and was awarded an allowance of $20 a month for their support to a period of five years and $10 per month for a period of five years thereafter.
  • 23 Mar 1901 The case of Bobay vs Bobay was dismissed.
  • 23 Mar 1901 Josephine Winkler was granted a decree of divorce from Frederick Winkler and allowed to resume her maiden name, Josephine Gerber.
  • 24 Mar 1901 Frances Geeting applies for a decree of divorce from Astian Geeting. They lived at Huntington when the husband's love cooled. He sent his wife to Fort Wayne with a purse of .75 cents and later shipped her wardrobe with a note that he did not care to see her again. When she was quite ill he would not respond to her call, and she thinks it time to be free from him.
  • 26 Mar 1901 Rosa Miller filed an application for divorce from Philip Miller and wants the custody of their three children. The plaintiff alleges that the defendant has beaten her, abused her and called her vile names.
  • 28 Mar 1901 Anna Wybourn sues for a divorce from Charles J. Wybourn.
  • 29 Mar 1901 Mrs. Mary D. Messler began action against her husband, Israel Messler for an accounting and judgment in the sum of $10.000. The parties have long resided in Lafayette township, but now live in the city. Mrs. Messler sets forth that when she married Mr. Messler, over twenty years ago, she had a farm of 114 acres that they have cultivated jointly, but now when she asks a division of the fruits of their labors the husband contends that all belongs to him. She insists that she is entitled to an equal share of the profits of the land and to enforce her rights she brings suit. In twenty years she has had but about $400 cash from the farm and this she believes is an unfair division.

  • 02 Apr 1901 Emelie Reimann began proceedings for divorce against Fred A. Reimann. A former suit against the husband was dismissed because then he was not a resident.
  • 02 Apr 1901 Anna C. Garman was granted a decree of divorce from Delbert A. Garman, $450 alimony, $50 attorney fees and $5 a month for the support of their minor child of ten years.
  • 02 Apr 1901 The case of Emilie Reimann vs Frederick Reimann was dismissed.
  • 03 Apr 1901 Jennie Williams files application for a decree of divorce from Benjamin Williams.
  • 03 Apr 1901 Nina P. Briggs begins proceedings in the superior court for a decree of divorce from Frank W. Riggs on the ground of abandonment.
  • 04 Apr 1901 Judge O'Rourke granted Nancy J. Reider a decree of divorce from John Reider on the wife's cross complaint, and restored her maiden name, Nancy Black.
  • 04 Apr 1901 Mary E. Johnson applies for a decree of divorce from Richard M. Johnson.
  • 06 Apr 1901 Mary E. Weist sues for a divorce from Horatio Weist.
  • 08 Apr 1901 In the case of Sarah Burger vs Joseph Burger, nun pro tune entry was ordered of the decree of judgment entered a year ago.
  • 10 Apr 1901 William Warcup, whose arrest on the charge of insanity has been noted, was released from jail yesterday in a writ of habeas corpus issued by Judge O'Rourke. Mr. Warcup is declared to be sane. During the day his wife instituted proceedings for divorce and a decree was issued in the circuit court, giving her the custody of their two minor children and the title to their farm near Huntertown. The parties were once before divorced and remarried.

  • 01 May 1901 Karie Heitz was granted a decree of divorce from Lillian Heitz. The wife gets the custody of their child.
  • 02 May 1901 Sarah Smith files application for a decree of divorce from George E. Smith.
  • 02 May 1901 Delbert A. Garman was cited to appear to show cause why he should not be punished for contempt of court in failing to turnover to his divorced wife the sum of $50, as he had been ordered to do. Judge Aiken found him guilty of contempt and sent him to jail to remain there until the $50 was paid.
  • 04 May 1901 Jennie Pfeiffer sues for a decree of divorce from John Pfeiffer, charging abandonment. The wife asks to have her maiden name, Jennie McConnell restored.
  • 04 May 1901 Eric A. Siebert sues for a divorce from Frances M. Siebert.
  • 05 May 1901 Jennie Pfeiffer was granted a decree of divorce from John Pfeiffer and the wife's maiden name, Jennie McConnell was restored.
  • 07 May 1901 Elmore L. Shannon sues for a decree of divorce from Geo. Shannon, alleging abandonment and failure to provide for his family.
  • 09 May 1901 Catherine Fegan sues for a decree of divorce from Joseph Fegan.
  • 09 May 1901 Mrs. Ida M. Hewitt was granted a decree of divorce from Frank M. Hewitt, and her maiden name, Whitney was restored.
  • 22 May 1901 William C. Melick sues for a decree of divorce from Mattie Melick, who is charged with cruel conduct, the use of foul language and failure to sustain the relations of wife.
  • 24 May 1901 Sophia M. Ditton sues for a decree of divorce from Clarence Ditton.
  • 24 May 1901 Chas. W. Sandmeyer sues for a decree of divorce from Mary E. Sandmeyer.
  • 24 May 1901 Robert Brandenburg sues for a decree of divorce from Matilda Brandenburg. The complaint charges that the defendant threatened to poison him
  • 24 May 1901 Louis B. Ertel sues for a decree of divorce from Anna M. Ertel. The wife is accused of throwing cups & saucers at the husband and threatening him with a knife.
  • 24 May 1901 The application of Mrs. Kessler for a decree of divorce from her husband, Dr. A. J. Kessler is on trial in the circuit court before Judge O'Rourke. Mrs. Kessler is endeavoring to establish charges of immoral conduct against the doctor, and in turn the doctor is introducing testimony to prove that his wife has nothing to complain of. Both the principals have been on the witness stand and their story of marital encounters was sensational to put it mildly. Names of prominent men and some women are implicated and the court room is thronged with men and women straining their ears to catch every work of the nasty and suggestive language used by the witnesses.
  • 25 May 1901 Catherine Roy was granted a divorce from John R. Roy and permission to resume her maiden name, Duplain.
  • 26 May 1901 The court handed down a decision in the Kessler divorce case, which was completed Friday evening. Mrs. Kessler is granted a decree of divorce from Dr. Kessler and $1500 alimony, $350 for attorney's fees, custody of their thirteen year old daughter, and $10 a month for her support for the next two years and $15 per month for the remainder of the time until she reaches the age of twenty-one. The doctor is also ruled to pay all court costs of the trial. The alimony and other allowances do not affect the real estate value at $4400, which is held by Dr. and Mrs. Kessler jointly, all allowances being separate and distinct and she retaining her interest in the property.

  • 04 Jun 1901 In the case of Charles F. Sandmeier vs Mary E. Sandmeier, the defendant defaulted and a part of the evidence was heard.
  • 04 Jun 1901 In the case of Sophia M, Dutton vs Clarence Dutton, an alias summons was ordered for the defendant to the sheriff of Delaware County.
  • 05 Jun 1901 In the divorce case of Louis Ertel vs Anna Ertel, the defendant defaulted.
  • 06 Jun 1901 Fanny M. Britton begins proceeding for a decree of divorce from Chas. M. Britton, and the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad company is restrained from paying wages to the defendant until the case is settled. Mrs. Britton is asking for alimony.

  • 08 Jun 1901 The case of Melick vs Melick was dismissed.
  • 09 Jun 1901 Sarah A. Miller begins proceedings for a decree of divorce from Wm. E. Miller.
  • 09 Jun 1901 Mrs. Alice Cutshall was granted a decree of divorce from Albert Cutshall, the custody of their child and $5 a month for its maintenance.
  • 09 Jun 1901 The divorce case of Britton vs Britton was dismissed.
  • 11 Jun 1901 Philip Schramm, an old soldier and inmate of the Marion Home for Veterans, began suit for divorce from Mary B. Schramm. He says his wife packed up his effects, led him to the door and told him never to darken it again. He went to the Soldier's home and now wants to be liberated altogether.
  • 11 Jun 1901 Joseph Christen asks for a decree of divorce from Nora Christen, whom he accused of adultery with Frank Kruetzer. He wants custody of their child.
  • 11 Jun 1901 Enora Mustain sues for a decree of divorce from Harvey Mustain because he has abused her and spent his time in the society of divers other women.
  • 11 Jun 1901 Judge Aiken granted Mary E. Wiest a divorce from Horatio Wiest and requires the husband to pay $10 a month for eight years for the support of three children.
  • 11 Jun 1901 In the divorce case of Wood vs Wood and answer of general denial was filed in the superior court.

The complaint charges the husband with long continued cruelty, with striking his wife, calling her vile names, threatening her life and accusing her falsely of infidelity.

  • 13 Jun 1901 Annie Wybourn was granted a decree of divorce from Chas. J. Wybourn and allowed to resume her maiden name, Annie C. Odell.

  • 15 Jun 1901 Rebecca Youse sues for a divorce from Nelson Youse. At the request of Rebecca Youse plaintiff, the court issued a restraining order enjoining Nelson H. Youse from disposing of or mortgaging his property, selling his wife's property or molesting her pending the hearing of divorce proceedings instituted by her.
  • 16 Jun 1901 George McKenzie was granted a decree of divorce from Ella McKenzie and he was given custody of their three children.
  • 20 Jun 1901 Sarah A. Miller was granted a divorce from William E. Miller and allowed to resume her maiden name, Sarah A. Bayer.
  • 20 Jun 1901 Mattie M. Wood vs John C. Wood, divorce granted plaintiff and permission to resume her maiden name, Mattie M. Chambers.
  • 20 Jun 1901 Laura Meyers vs William Meyers, plaintiff was granted a divorce and custody of child, $5 per month for its support. She is also permitted to resume her maiden name, Laura Dillow.
  • 21 Jun 1901 Mrs. Dora Rodenberg begins proceeding for a divorce from William Rodenberg. She asks alimony in the sum of $2000 and the custody of their children. The husband is now in jail because he could not give bond to keep the peace.
  • 21 Jun 1901 In the case of Schramm vs Schramm, the defendant asks for an allowance.

  • 03 Jul 1901 Frances E. Babcock was granted a decree of divorce from Jesse Babcock and the court restored her maiden name, Stockman.
  • 04 Jul 1901 Sarah E. Smith was granted a decree of divorce from George F. Smith and custody of one child.
  • 07 Jul 1901 Lotta M. Bennett sues for a decree of divorce from Sidney C. Bennett.
  • 09 Jul 1901 Mrs. Florence McLish sues for a decree of divorce from Ozens McLish who is serving a term in prison. The wife charges ectreme cruelty and abuse.

  • 01 Aug 1901 The divorce case of William S. Parry against Mary E. Parry was up for hearing. Mrs. Parry filed a sworn answer to her husband's complaint denying his charges of cruelty and abandonment and a contest was precipitated. Finally a divorce was granted to the wife, the custody of one child and $5 a month for its support for five years. The husband was given custody of one child.

  • 11 Sep 1901 Wm H. F. Schotemeyer applies for a divorce from his wife, Anna J. Schotemeyer. William has a grievance. He married Anna in 1893 and they lived together with more or less happiness until last spring. Then the spark of love was quenched with beer. This is the story. Mr. & Mrs. Schotemeyer visited Dorrece, Russell County, Kansas. There the met Herman Krause in a social way and when William's duties as car inspector on the Wabash called him home and he slept the sleep of the just in his humble home at no. 4 Killia street, Anna lingered in Kansas and accepted the attentions of Krause. According to the husband's complaint she went out with Krause in the stirring air of Kansas and under the affectionate influence of springtime drank beer with him, sank into his arms and was hugged and squeezed. Where the husband obtained this information he sayeth nor, but he swears to it and because his wife come home can called him names, affectionately referred to him as a "d-----d Dutchman" and said she did not love him since she met Krause, he wants a decree of divorce and the custody of their child.

He alleges that he married her on April 19 last, at the instance of her father. He was a minor and in the absence of permission from his parents, who resided in Germany, the clerk of Allen county refused to issue a license. Then, he recites the defendant's father took him to Adams county, where a license was procured by mis-representation and the marriage to place.
