  • 01 Jan 1913 Rose E. Dager has brought suit for a divorce from John Dager on the ground that he treated her cruelly and was an habitual drunkard.
  • 03 Jan 1913 Albert R. Jackson yesterday commenced suit for divorce against Hattie E. Jackson, charging her with treating him cruelly. He recites that for more than a year past she had frequently prayed God that he obtain a divorce.
  • 03 Jan 1913 Charles A. Snyder seeks a divorce from Adda Snyder, charging her with frequently cursing him and that for months at a time she refused to abide with him.

  • 07 Jan 1913 Mary J. Fabian has brougth suit for divorce from Julius W. Fabian, declaring that he cursed her, threw her from the house, threatened her life and was an habitual drunkard. She asks for alimony in the sum of $2,500.

  • 12 Jan 1913 In the Harber divorce case, the judgement of the court shows that the plaintiff received alimony in the sum of $2,400 and was authorized to resume the use of her maiden name.
  • 12 Jan 1913 Florence Hedges has brought suit for divorce against John B. Hedges, alleging cruel and inhuman treatment.
  • 14 Jan 1913 Eva L. Perl was granted a divorce, the custody of her child and $10 per month alimony on her complaint filed in superior court yesterday. It was shown that the defendant frequently struck and cursed his wife and gave her but fifty cents per week to maintain the household after he had paid the rent.

  • 30 Jan 1913 John Auer was granted a divorce in superior court from Florence Auer. Their married life was brief but stormy, the evidence showing that Mrs. Auer attacked him with a poker.
  • 30 Jan 1913 Dorothy Ward has brought shit against Leroy Ward asking for a divorce. She alleges that from the time of their marriage he failed to provide her with food, shelter or clothing. As fast as the rent came due at the tooms in which he place her, she says she was forced to suffer the humiliation of being ejected.

  • 01 Feb 1913 Anna Hensinger charged David Hensinger with cruel and inhuman treatment in a complaint brought by yesterday and within an hour the court has passed upon the case and granted the decree.
  • 01 Feb 1913 Sarah E. Andrews was granted a divorce, the custodyof the minor child and alimony in the sum of $1,500 in her complaint against Harry J. Andrews. The case was heard in superior court.

  • 15 Feb 1913 Homer Hurley has brougth suit against Lillie J. Hurley for a divorce, alleging cruel and inhuman treatment. He charges that his wife perfers to live in Marion and refuses to remain at home and attend to her household duties.
  • 16 Feb 1913 Luther Douglas was granted a divorce from Maud Douglas yesterday in superior court. Douglass charges cruel and inhuman treatment and alleged that his wife remained away from home for long periods.
  • 16 Feb 1913 Bertha C. Hicks says that John Hicks deserted her and after a long time she discovered that he was in the army. She seeks a divorce on the ground of desertion.
  • 16 Feb 1913 After forty-three years of married life, John Heffelfinger has brought suit for divorce from Flora J. Heffelfinger, charging abandonment.
  • 18 Feb 1913 Lena F. Edwards vs. Edward C. Edwards, suit for divorce has been dismissed.
  • 18 Feb 1913 Dora Turner has brought suit for divorce from Pearl Turner, asking $1,000 alimony and alleging cruel and inhuman treatment. One of the allegations is that Turner failed to provide kindling wood. A restraining order was issued by the court.
  • 19 Feb 1913 Cecelia Slagle was given a divorce from Carl Slagle, the custody of their minor child and is to receive the sum of $10 per month for its support.

  • 21 Feb 1913 Jennie M. Johnson yesterday brought suit for divorce from Richard M. Johnson and asks for alimony in the sum of $15,000. She charges cruel and inhuman treatment and declares that she was compelled to cook for large numbers of laborers and to live in a room that had been used alternately to house farm machinery and foreign beet workers. She recites that Johnson is the owner of three large farms, one of which is located in Texas.
  • 21 Feb 1913 Minnie C. Halk is seeking a divorce from William Halk, alleging cruel and inhuman treatment.
  • 21 Feb 1913 Emma Hess has brought suit to modify the alimony against George Hess.
  • 22 Feb 1913 Flossie Dull was granted a divorce from Herbert Dull, the custody of their minor child and eight dollar per month alimony in superior court.
  • 22 Feb 1913 Maggie J. Genth has brought suit against Walter L. Genth for divorce, allegeing cruel and inhuman treatment.
  • 23 Feb 1913 Mable Livergood was granted a divorce from John Livergood in superior court yesterday. She was given the custody of a minor child and is to receive $4 per month from the defendant.
  • 23 Feb 1913 Part of the evidence was heard in the case of Ellen vs. Adam Rubin, for divorce. In a statement to the court yesterday, Mrs. Rubin testified that the husband pawned the wedding gifts and failed to provide for her in any way.
  • 26 Feb 1913 In the superior court, Mrs. Ellen Rubin was granted a decree of divorce from Adam Rubin by Judge Yaple.
  • 26 Feb 1913 The divorce case of Mrs. Zoe Gaskill against Claude Gaskill was dismissed in the superior court.
  • 26 Feb 1913 Mrs. Malissa C. Dishong begins proceedings for a decree of divorce from Thomas Dishong, the husband being charged with drunkenness, and when in that state he abused and struck his wife, finally neglecting to support her.
  • 26 Feb 1913 Minerva R. Burbick has filed a complaint for a linited separation and a restraining order against Sumner G. Burbick. She asks for $5,000 alimony. Mrs. Burbick complains that her husband treated her cruelly and that he associated with other women, cursing her when she objected to his attentions to others. She also says that she inherited $8,000 and that he has squandered all but a few hundred of this, and besides has contracted large debts. She asks that he be enjoined from selling the stock and fixtures in the grocery and meat market owned by them and from selling the family automobile, also from annoying her or interfering with her in any way.
  • 27 Feb 1913 Laura E. Hill has brought suit against Servatus Hill for divorce, basing her complaint on the ground of desertion.
  • 28 Feb 1913 Dorothy Ward was granted a divorce from Leroy Ward in superior court yesterday morning.
  • 28 Feb 1913 Henry A. Berning seeks a divorce from Frances Berning, alleging that she treated his cruelly, refused to cook his meals or to care for their child.

  • 01 Mar 1913 Charles Martin, who was before Judge Eggeman yesterday on a charge of neglecting his children, was given until Tuesday to prepare a bond guaranteeing his willingness to provide for his family in the future. The court scored Martin unmercifully and indicated that parents who neglect their offspring are to have short shrift in his court.
  • 01 Mar 1913 Nellie Haley has brought suit in circuit court for a divorce from Edward Haley, charging cruel and inhuman treatment. She asks for a restraining order preventing him from disposing of his property.
  • 01 Mar 1913 George Bennett, charged with wife desertion, entered a plea of not guilty and after hearing the evidence in the case, he was acquitted by the court.
  • 01 Mar. 1913 Gertrude Pierce has brought suit for divorce from Celsus Pierce, alleging cruel and inhuman treatment.
  • 01 Mar 1913 Frances Tavenet wants a limited separation from Roy Tavenet and $50 per month for her support.
  • 01 Mar 1913 Cora Hill seeks a divorce from Nathaniel B. Hill, alleging cruel and inhuman treatment.
  • 02 Mar 1913 Elnora Kelly was granted a divorce from John L. Kelly in superior court yesterday and is given the custody of a minor child.
  • 02 Mar 1913 In a divorce complaint covering five closely written pages, Adam McCormick charges Ada McCormick with breaking each and every law laid down for the guidance and happiness of married couples, not only once, but many times.
  • 04 Mar 1913 Clara E. Felton was granted a divorce from Peter Felton in superior court yesterday.
  • 04 Mar 1913 Goldie Benner wants a divorce from William Benner, alleging that he had been guilty of cruel and inhuman treatment and that he wholly abandoned her.
  • 05 Mar 1913 Walter Langtry was granted a divorce from Rose Langtry on a complaint in superior court.
  • 05 Mar 1913 Lydia Pearl DeVeney, who brought a suit for divorce from Claude G. DeVeney was successful and the decree was granted her yesterday afternoon in superior court.
  • 05 Mar 1913 Adda Coddington brought action for divorce January 20 against George Coddington, alleging drunkenness. On the 22nd. the suit was dismissed, but yesterday it was refiled by the former plaintiff, who insists that Coddington failed to reform.
  • 05 Mar 1913 Bertha Beltz has brought suit for divorce against Adam Beltz and seeks the curtody of their minor children. The couple formerly lived on Boone street. Cruel and inhuman treatment and desertion are part of the allegations.
  • 05 Mar 1913 Rose E. Milligan seeks a divorce from Albert Milligan, basing her complaint on the ground of adultery and charging that Mulligan has been convicted of crime.
  • 05 Mar 1913 Henry Buffenberger seeks a divorce from Nettie Buffenberger.
  • 06 Mar 1913 Franklin Murphy was granted a divorce from Mary Murphy following a hearing in superior court.
  • 07 Mar 1913 Judge Eggeman heard the plea of George G. Killen for a decree of divorce from Carrie Killen and both admitted that their married life, extending twenty-five years, was gruitful of so much happiness and love that he asked them to go home, forget little troubles and after kissing away the memory of a few angry words, pledge affection anew and be good. Mr. and Mrs. Killen agreed to do as the court directed and the case was dismissed.
  • 07 Mar 1913 Frank E. Tibbles begins proceedings for a decree of divorce from Ida M. Tibbles. The husband charges that his wife has accused him of too much intimacy with other women, that she has an ungovernable temper and nags him constantly, going so far as to spy on him, expecting to find his associating with gayer women. The husband says that her suspicions are without justice.
  • 07 Mar 1913 Judge Yaple granted to Mary Seibert a decree of divorce from Charles Siebert.
  • 09 Mar 1913 Although Pearl Everding was granted a divorce in superior court yesterday from Jacob Everding, the troubles of the couple are not at an end. On Tuesday Mrs. Everding will have to answer in Squire Grabner's court to a charge of drawing a pistol upon her former husband. An affidavit charging this offence was sworn out several days ago. In granted the divorce the court also awarded Mrs. Everding the custody of two children and ordered the father to pay to the clerk of the court the sum of $10.00 per month for their support.
  • 09 Mar 1913 Ruth Pyle has brought suit for divorce from Charles C. Pyle, alleging that he treated her cruelly and falsely accused her of infidelity. She seeks alimony in the sum of $1,000.
  • 11 Mar 1913 Sarah C. Geiser has brought suit against Frederick Geiser for divorce, charging him with abandonment and with cruel and inhuman in his treatment of her.
  • 11 Mar 1913 Bertha Zimmerman wants a divorce from Edward Zimmerman and asks the custody of two minor children.
  • 12 Mar 1913 In superior court yesterday the divorce suit of Olive Thavenet vs. Henry Thavenet was dismissed. The parties have patched up their difficulties and are agains living together.
  • 12 Mar 1913 Ollie Morrison has brought suit for divorce from Vern Morrison alleging that prior to their marriage he represented himself to be a man of great wealth, won her affection and her heart and that later it developed that he was merely a stock buyer on a $10 per week salary.
  • 12 Mar 1913 Emma Lanning is asking a divorce from Ernest H. Lanning on the ground of non-support. Lanning is now serving time in jail for wife desertion.
  • 13 Mar 1913 Maude Gray has brought suit for divorce from Henry Gray, alleging desertion.
  • 13 Mar 1913 Laura Deutschman seeks an order from the court compelling Peter Deutschman to care for their two children. At the hearing of a divorce complaint some time ago, the children were given to the custody of the father. The plaintiff alleges that he has never cared for them and that she is unable to support them longer on her meagre earnings.
  • 13 Mar 1913 Ola L. Galer seeks a divorce from Marie Galer, charging cruel and inhuman treatment.
  • 13 Mar 1913 Hazel Fry seeks a limited separation for Cleveland Fry, charging him with cruelty. He is employed as a mototman for the Fort Wayne and Northern Indiana Traction company.
  • 13 Mar 1913 Judge Eggeman some days ago in refusing George G. Killen a divorce advided Mr. and Mrs. Killen to make peace, that their differences were not serious, that their long married life deserved a happy ending, but Mrs. Killen want The Journal-Gazette to say that she is nor reconciled, nor did she return to her husband.
  • 14 Mar 1913 Amanda Jacobs was granted a divorce, the custody of two children and $25 per month at a hearing of her complaint in circuit court yesterday.
  • 14 Mar 1913 Bertha Zimmerman and Edward Zimmerman have patched up their difficulties and a divorce complaint filed early in the week has been dismissed.

  • 16 Mar 1913 Anna Miller was granted a divorce in the superior court yesterday from Grant Miller and was given the custody of two children. Miller left her six years ago and she has not heard from him since that time.
  • 16 Mar 1913 Benjamin Riddner has brought suit in the superior court against Pearl Riddner, asking a divorce. He charges cruel and inhuman treatment. The woman, whom he married in 1904, left him, he says, and remained away four years. She returned and asked forgiveness but, after staying six months, again left on December 23, 1912.

  • 19 Mar 1913 In superior court yesterday Melissa Dishong was granted a divorce from Thomas Dishong.

  • 20 Mar 1913 William Clayton was granted a divorce in the superior court yeaterday from Grace Clayton. He charged abandonment.
  • 20 Mar 1913 The superior court gave Frank M. Miller a divorce from Flora E. Miller. Abandonment was charged.
  • 20 Mar 1913 Ines Sink has brought suit against Wesley N. Sink, asking a divorce and charging cruel and inhuman treatment. She also asks that he be restrained from visiting or molesting her.
  • 20 Mar 1913 Hettie C. Scobey wants a divorce from William Scobey, who, she says abandoned her.
  • 21 Mar 1913 Henry Berning was granted a divorce from Frances Berning in superior court yesterday and was given the custody of the minor child.
  • 21 Mar 1913 In the case of Adam vs. Ada McCormick for a divorce, a change of venue has been granted and the case sent to the Wells circuit court for a hearing.
  • 21 Mar 1913 Edna Althouse seeks a divorce from Thomas Althouse, charging that he cursed her, got drunk and remained out until unseemly hours in the morning. She asks a restraining order prohibiting his disposal of property pending the suit.

  • 23 Mar 1913 Carrie Killen has brought suit against her husband, George Killen, asking an accounting and partition. They are joint owners, she says, of the Crystal and Star moving picture shows. On January 15 Killen caused her to be removed from the management of the Crystal and drew all of their money out of their joint account and re-deposited it in his own name. The Killens recently filed complaints for divorce against one another and then dismissed them.

He charges that she was intimate with other men, one of whom she referred to as her "lover" and who she, said, was to marry her when a divorce was obtained; that she told him frequently that she did not love him and had married him only because of the money she thought he had; that she started divorce proceedings while they were living in Philadelphia but withdrew the action when she heard that he was to fall heir to a considerable sum of money, and that in many other ways she treated him in a cruel and inhuman manner. The couple was married on June 25, 1901, and lived together until August 28, 1910.

Hardly has the ink dried on the first case until driver filed a suit against Max Andrews, a dentist, demanding damages in the sum of $5,000 for the Alienation of his wife's affections. The complaint in the alienation suit is based on the same charges specified in the complaint for divorce.

  • 26 Apr 1913 Although Charles Harris did not intend to contest the claim of his wife, Zella M. Harris, for divorce, he did appear in the court room as a spectator and when Judge Eggeman discovered his presence he promptly placed him upon the witness stand, asked his questions concerning the case and denied a divorce. On the stand Harris declared that he had had trouble with his wife only after he found th she as entertaining other men while he was at work in Chicago. He denied that he had ever struck her and Mrs. Harris admitted that this was true. The couple was not reconciled in spite of the refusal of the court to grant the divorce.

  • 16 May 1913 Guy S. Pettit has commenced an action for divorce from Minnie Pettit, alleging that while he was called away from his work at nights his wife held clandestine meetings with dissolute men and that on at least one occasion she become so intoxicated that she had to be assisted home.
  • 17 May 1913 Judge Yaple has indicated that in rendering his verdict in the Bair divorce case, he will give the custody of the minor child to the father. It was over this question that the legal battle hinged. To-day the property of the parties will be decided and the court will enter his finding on the records.

  • 24 May 1913 When Judge Yaple, of the superior court, sent Charles Siebert, New Haven carpenter, to jail for thirty days last December because the fellow had failed to obey the order of the court and pay $10 a month to his divorced wife for the support of their child, he did not profit by the punishment, and has ignored the instructions since his release, he was again haled before Judge Yaple yesterday and sentenced to sixty days in jail for contempt.

She charges that he treated her cruelly, falsely accused her of adultry, declared his love for her was cold, refused to take her and the children out in public and carried a revolner with which he frequently threatened to kill himself.

Richardson came to Fort Wayne some time ago from Terre Haute, it is alleged, and has been living in adultery with Kit Cummins, according to Mrs. Richardson's cross complaint. It appears that an anonymous letter, telling Mrs. Richardson of the action for divorce brought by her husband, aroused her ire and induced her to bring the cross complaint.

He says that the defendant, from whom he separaated June 5, after eleven years of married life, frequently told him that she had ceased to love him and that she made his existence unbearable with her bickerings.

She also asks $1,000 alimony and $50 suit money. The Baileys were married Feb. 1, 1905, and lived together until Friday. She says in her complaint that he cursed her, beat her and a few months ago transmitted a vile disease to her.

He charges that his wife was too gay, that she would cavort and go buggy riding with strange men, would write them fond nots and stay away from home all night. The parties were married in Warsaw December 9, 1903 and lived together until some nonths ago. Mr. Newcomb asks the court to assign to him the care of their only child, eight years old.

Mr. Hoy asks the custody of their one child.

The wife says that her husband called her vile names, falsely accused her of being unfaithful, with associating with other men and all of the accusations are denied in the complaint. Gaskill for divorce, and Judge Yaple issued an order to restrain the Indiana Road Machine company, where he is employed, from paying him his wages until the determination of the wife's suit. The couple were wed in December, 1910, and separated last March. Cruel and inhuman treatment from the time of the marriage is alleged. She says he cursed her in terms unfit to put in a complaint, called her vile and filthy names, showed ungovernable temper, struck and beat her, and would not provide for her support.
  • 17 Jul 1913 Not in recent years has there been a case for divorce so bitterly contested in the Allen county courts as is that of Matilda vs. John Eicks. The case is on trial in superior court, where it has already consumed three days and indications are that it will require at least another day for the submission of evidence.

During the afternoon the judge made an effort to bring about a reconciliation of the parties, being closeted for a time with the parties to either side of the controvery and their attorneys. Mrs. Eiks, it is said, refused absolutely to conside such an move, declaring that on a former occasion she had withdrawn a complaint and that her husband thereafter taunted her about her action.

He condoned her infidelity two time and then she finally left him and went to live with Bereot. This unlawful alliance was broken up some time ago and Mrs. Bradley has since been at Roanoke.

She says that he beat her, forced a false confennion of adultery from her, refused to provide for her and deserted her.

  • 05 Dec 1913 That her husband sought to rid himself of her presence by having her confined in an insane asylum, beat her with his fists, used a horse whip and a broomhandle in chastising her, denied her the necessaries of life and has been guilty of infidelity are a few of the charges brougth by Mrs. Nora Errington, wife of Samuel Errington, former republican candidate for sheriff and a well known barber, in her complaint for divorce file yesterday. Mrs. Errington recites that she is the mother of seven children, the oldest, a daughter, Grance, who is eighteen. She declares that for years the husband has been following a policy of studied cruelty and extreme brutality in his treatment of her and the he has beaten her so often with his fists that she does not recall the number of times. In August, 1912, she delclares, her health was so badly impaired by his abuse that she was utterly broken down and the husband seized this opportunity to have he confined in the insane asylum at East Haven, where with rest and kind treatment she speedily recovered. Since then she says he has repeatedly called her "East Have Nut" and "Alley Rat." On December 1, she declares her husband, with her eldest daughter, whose affections he has turned from her, threw her from the house and threw her clothing into the yard. She returned home on December 2 and was set upon, she says, by the two and badly beaten. Since then she has relied upon the charity of neighbors for her support. She declares that her husband is infatunted with a woman name Chloe King and that he frequenty told his little children that when he got rid of Mrs. Errington, the King woman was to be their mother. She has asked the court to issue a restraining order preventing the defendant from selling any of his property or of disposing of it in any way to her disadvantage until after the trial of the case. The custody of the six younger children is asked by Mrs. Errington and she says that the oldest daughter prefers to stay with the father.

  • 21 Dec 1913 Suit for divorce and $10,000 alimony was brought by Rosa Baum against Samuel Baum in the circuit court yesterday and at her petition the defendant, his son, Henry, and daughter, Minnette, and the First National German-American, Old Nationa dn Hamilton Narional banks, the German American Trust company, the Citizens Trust company and the Tri-State Loan and Trust company and the Home Telephone and Telegraph company were restrained from making any transfer of the Baum money or property. The Baums are among the most prominent Jewish people in Fort Wayne and the suit caused no little stir in business and social circles. Mr. Baum is head of Baum & Co. commission merchants. For four years prior to their separation on September 13, 1912, Mrs. Baum, who is 67 years of age and was married to the defendant in December 1880, says in her complaint he treated her with studied neglect and contempt. He induced his daughter, Minnette Baum, to come to live with tem in December a year ago and it is charged with the young woman aided in making life miserable for Mrs. Baum, finally forcing her to leave him. They scoffed and jeered at her when she broke down and cried after he efforts to be friendly were rebuffed. Immediately after she left, Mrs. Baum says, her husband began putting his business and financial affairs in such a shape that if she could bring suit for alimony he could cheat her out of what was due her. He gave large sums of money to his daughter and placed stocks and property in the latter's name, the complaint says, for the sole purpose of defrauding the wife and is now preparing to incorporate his business, formerly a partnership with his son, Henry. so that he may transfer the stock to the daughter or son.
