  • 14 Jan 1876 Allen County Record. A List of Prisoners sent to the Penitentiary during Mr. Hance's Administration. During the last two years of the late Sheriff Hance's administration, the following prisoners, with their crimes, dates of conviction and terms of imprisonment have been sent to the Michigan City prison.   • 11 Jan 1876 Dan Gibbs stole a lap robe. He was sentenced this morning to the penitentiary for one year. John Leighton stole an overcoat from John Lehr and two years was assigned to him in the penitentiary. (FWDN)
  • 12 Jan 1876 William Smith was this morning sentenced to the penitentiary for two years for larceny. (FWDN)
  • 17 Jan 1876 Martin Flaugherty and Michael McNulty whose names appeared in the list yesterday as prisoners sent to the penitentiary were granted new trials and their cases dismissed. We readily make this correction. (FWDN)

  • 01 Mar 1876 A man named Stiles goes to the penitentiary for three years for attempting a horrible crime on a little girl at Garrett City. (FWDN)

  • 18 Apr 1876 Yesterday, Henry Waldebaum received his final sentence of two years in the penitentiary and this morning Sheriff Wise conveyed him to Michigan City. (FWDN)

  • 17 May 1876 There are 575 convicts in the Michigan City penitentiary on Saturday, 125 more than employment can be afforded to. (FWWS)
  • 30 May 1876 Wall was taken to the penitentiary at Michigan City to serve a life sentence for murder committed ten months ago. (FWS)

  • 19 Jun 1876 This morning in the criminal court Charles H. Clark the horse thief plead guilty to the charges of grand larceny and was sentenced to the penitentiary for three years, Lewis Abbot of Hesse Cassel wheat thief was sentenced to one year and Frank Emerson for petit larceny one year.   • 19 Jun 1876 Frank Emerson was this morning sentenced to one year in the penitentiary for petit larceny. (FWS)

  • 11 Aug 1876 Cyrus Nolan who was sent to the penitentiary in 1864 for participating in robbery and attempted murder of the Krouse family in St. Joseph Township has just regained his liberty having served out his term of 12 years. He is now in the city. (FWS)
  • 23 Aug 1876 John Burns was arrested today for stealing a watch. Burns got out of the penitentiary only a few weeks ago. (FWS)

  • 22 Sep 1876 The following sentences to the penitentiary in accordance with the verdicts rendered: John Burns, three years; John Ryan, two years; Richard Reichstein, one year, all for grand larceny. (FWS)

  • 12 Oct 1876 Ellmore the horse thief was safely caged in the penitentiary at Michigan City yesterday. (FWDN)

  • 26 Dec 1876 Leonard the young man who "nipped" a few things from Foster Bros. & Co. sometime ago was found guilty in the criminal court on Saturday and sentenced to one year in the penitentiary. (FWDN)
