Cholera and Other Deaths, Jul.-Sep. 1849, Fort Wayne, Indiana

The following burials were reported in the Fort Wayne Sentinel during the cholera epidemic of 1849. This list also includes deaths due to other causes.

City Cemetery was the public burial ground on Broadway, the present site of McCullough Park. The Catholic cemetery was likely the old Catholic burial ground near Phenie St., Riedmiller Av., Wall St., and Swinney Av. which was purchased by Rev. Fr. Julian Benoit in Feb. 1849.

If a name on this list interests you, be sure to consult the 1850 Mortality Schedule.

For more information about the cholera epidemic of 1849, see Frontier Faith: The Story of the Pioneer Congregations of Fort Wayne, Indiana, 1850-1860 by George Mather, pp. 87-88.
