Even in the Information Age, many still hold a profound appreciation for the past. Exactly 100 years ago today, on February 12, 1921, the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society was created at a banquet of 175 citizens in the auditorium of Wolf & Dessauer. This first official gathering of local history lovers was branded “History is a Pageant, Not a Philosophy” and featured a student revue about the construction of the Wabash and Erie Canal. At a meeting the following month at Fort Wayne High School, the Historical Society was formally organized with 208 charter members each paying the $1 fee to join the fledgling organization, and the first officers were elected. When formed, the Historical Society (originally named the Fort Wayne Historical Society) had few assets, and began collecting historical materials in 1923 with an original inventory of around 100 objects. These items were first displayed in the Relic Room at the Allen County Courthouse (1923-1927) and then at the Swinney Homestead Museum (1927-1980). Since 1980, the museum, now known as the History Center, has resided at 302 East Berry Street in the old City Building. Over the decades the historical society acquired two additional historic sites, the 1837 Barr Street Market in 1990 and the 1827 Chief Richardville House in 1991. Today the organization serves nearly 80,000 patrons each year and maintains one of the largest locally relevant anthologies of historical materials in the country, with more than 32,000 artifacts, 20,000 photographs, and over 1,000 linear feet of archival material representing the community we call home.
